How to Style a Trendy, Winter Groutfit Like Your Favorite Influencers

As much as I’m craving warmer weather and pastel-toned outfits, we’re not quite there yet. The weather is still cold, windy, and it snowed a winter wonderland this past week. It was so beautiful, though. It was one of those dark, gloomy days that held magic and made you want to twirl around in the snow.

After staring out the window at the little flurries and sipping hot chocolate for way too long, I got inspired to put together a monochromatic outfit. The thought I had in mind was how can I recreate those super trendy, street style groutfits that my favorite fashion influencers rock on their Instagrams?

Oh, by the way, a groutfit is a gray outfit. ;)

I’m not from the snow, I’m from the Bay Area. So winter fashion is a territory I am totally unfamiliar with. But I was determined to figure out a formula for the perfect winter groutfit that’s not only stylish but cold-weather friendly.

Start with practical base layers to keep you warm.

The first layers of your outfit won’t matter as much stylistically because their sole purpose is to keep you warm. There’s nothing worse than prioritizing style over warmth because they truly need to have equal importance if you want to look good and also not freeze your ass off.

My go-to base layers are a cashmere long-sleeve, high-waisted leggings, and cozy tube socks.

Grab your favorite sweat and hoodie set.

For a super attainable, casual and comfy look, grab your favorite pair of matching sweats and a hoodie. I chose a heather grey sweat set.

Pro tip: Buy your sweats from the men’s section because they can be worn as high-waisted sweats. I also love to buy my hoodies one size larger than my regular size for that cool-girl, baggy look. For reference, I’m wearing an XS in the men’s sweats and a Medium in the hoodie (which I often buy from the men’s section, too.)

Throw on a darker-colored trench coat.

Okay, we have to go over some specifics that will either make or break your outfit. (I’m being dramatic, you can dress however the hell you want.)

If I am wearing a lighter-colored sweat set, I want to add contrast by adding a darker-toned trench coat. You could do vice-versa but I think it looks more stylish when the coat is darker and the outfit underneath is lighter in terms of a monochromatic outfit.

Next, let’s talk about shoulders.

If you want that model-off-duty, it-girl, cool-girl, influencer style, opt for a drop shoulder instead of a structured shoulder.

When your trench coat has a structured shoulder, it looks more corporate and sophisticated. Because that’s not the look we’re going for here, choose a drop shoulder to make the coat look more relaxed and effortless.

My exact trench coat is from Zara but it’s sold out.

Keep it cool with sneakers.

Pair this outfit with your favorite pair of sneakers.

Everyone and their best friend have Nike Air Force 1s and this would be a classic outfit to wear them with if you have them too. Or, you can opt for a pair of all-white sneakers that I’m sure you already own! I have two pairs of all-white sneakers and I chose the ones that have more of a platform to them because I think the height looks better with the overall outfit.

Alternatively, you could use your sneakers to add some color or dimension to the outfit, especially if you can round up some matching accessories to the color in your shoes.

Tips on how to accessorize your outfit.

If you’re new to the accessory department, a no-fail way to succeed at accessorizing is to match the color of your accessories together.

For my outfit, I matched the color of my black bag with my black hair accessories. And because my bag also had gold hardware, I made sure my jewelry was gold as well. Now, I could have worn black shoes to really tie all the accessories together (and that’s a great idea to do when you’re just starting out with accessorizing, too.) However, I wanted to try something slightly different and break the color up by adding white shoes to my outfit for a different kind of contrast.

My bag is vintage Chanel, my earrings are vintage Tiffany’s and Co., and my ring is from Mejuri (be sure to snag 10% off your first purchase.)
